Just Landed - Canada`s finest - Part Two - Wings & Horns

Nov 15th 2010

The second new arrival from our friends in Canada is Wings & Horns.

Launched in 2004, originally under the name Spruce – laterally changed due to copyright reasons – Wings & Horns has had a hugely influential role in shaping contemporary streetwear. Wings & Horns became the second in-house brand for Canadian based CYC Design Corp, creators of Reigning Champ and manufacturers of renowned streetwear brands such as ALIFE and Supreme. Craig Atkinson and Brian Mendoza who head the design team have worked to forge a relationship between Japanese streetwear styling and Canadian inspiration utilising tailored designs which are united with custom fabrics. Atkinson, who spent seven years working as a designer in Japan has stated “They re-taught me what quality used to be in North America.” in reference to Japanese tailoring. The brand utilises high quality fabrics in a more directional sense than Reigning Champ and all pieces take inspiration from Canadian Heritage. Mendoza has stated that the brand “aims to bring that classic element, that true timeless feel”, a concept which separates the brand from others of the streetwear genre. Tailored aesthetics are combined with neutral colours throughout all collections. This suggests that detailed research has gone into the brand, as other labels which are manufactured by CYC, perhaps take a different focus. Wings & Horns therefore perhaps is more suited for today’s market where consumers are more likely to buy less, but, of higher quality. Also, this suggests that the neutral colours of Canada which inspire the clothes are more suited as they are likely to remain constant throughout collections.

Wings & Horns has undoubtedly played a large role in fashion emphasis across the market, as one of the early adopters of the perennial chino trouser. These have grown increasingly popular each season, now permeating through other brands. 2009 saw the division of the brand into its Research and Archive collections. ‘Archive’ which is more ’staple’ focussed is devoted the continuation of pieces such as hooded sweatshirts and three quarter sleeve t-shirts which have gained the brand following through their lower end price point compared to other outerwear pieces from the brand. ‘Archive’ however has taken on a more mature approach, adopting pieces such as blazers and ties as seen in the ’spring/summer 10? look book which has caused a stir among streetwear fans through its non-compliance with other streetwear trends.

Therefore it would appear that Wings & Horns is making attempts to bridge the gap between high end fashion and streetwear. The brand is certainly one of the best we have seen for a while and is already causing a stir in our store.

You can view and purchase Wings & Horns here.

Just Landed - Canada`s finest - Part One - Reigning Champ

Nov 15th 2010

The CYC Canada Design Corporation are very busy people. As well as producing their now renowned premium sweats for the likes of Supreme, Alife and Engineered Garments, they have now ventured into the premium menswear market with the launch of two fantastic and highly sought after brands of their own.

The first to arrive with us is Reigning Champ. If you want to believe the hype that surrounds CYC's products, then RC is the brand you need to touch and view, to see just how much work actually goes into each and every product. With the focus essentially on fabric, colour and fit, Reigning Champ use only the best heavyweight fabrics to produce the very best in classic American/Canadian inspired sportswear.

We initially bring you a small but well selected collection, though one we feel best shows the fantastic basic construction of each piece including jersey tees and their much maligned 25oz cotton zip through hooded tops. To top it all off, each piece has been lovingly made in Canada - we cant say much better than that!!

You can view and purchase the collection for yourselves here - though we must warn you that stock is very limited.

Cro' Jack - Classic British Outerwear at its best!

Nov 09th 2010

Come on we all know winter is now well and truly here, and forget umbrellas etc, the first thing you should be looking for right now is a good piece of outerwear. Yes, we know we had some amazing Summer jackets but what you really need is something that is gonna protect you from the chills, and if you live up North like our goodselves, then you will know just how cold things can get!

But lets be honest, Winter is by far and away (in our humble opinion anyway) the best season in terms of fashion offerings, with some fantastic pieces from the likes of C.P. Company and Stone Island etc. but to be fair, the Italians have had their own way in the outerwear market for far too long. So bring on the British we here you cry. Well lately the British brands have started to really up their game, with the likes of Barbour and Mackintosh now starting to gain international recognition, recognition we are sure you will agree has been a long time coming. A new brand though which has entered the game is Cro' Jack. Cro'Jack or Crossjack (though actually pronounced Cro Jeck) is a totally British brand who's collections are inspired by military and functionality and a desire to create garments using British know-how and craftmanship. Each and every piece in the collection is handmade in England, working with many old British mills and using fabrics that have provenance, cutting and sewing the fabulous fabrics in their own factory in the West Midlands.

The brand is definitely one to keep a close eye on, believe us these guys are producing some of the best outerwear we have seen in ages, with a larger product range to follow soon. We have a very limited selection of the jackets instore and online and you can view the collection here.
